Muhammad Yunus conseille à la Chine de changer sa législation pour encourager le développement du microcrédit.

Nobel laureate and Bangladeshi grassroots leader Muhammad Yunus has advised the Chinese government to make necessary changes in the legal framework in order to encourage micro-credit organisations with the goal of uplifting the poor. He urged the government to empower micro-credit organisations to take deposits. Micro-credit should be seen as a business opportunity and relegated to the back burner as a purely charitable and money losing activity, he said while speaking at a conference on the subject in Beijing on Sunday.

"The business model of micro credit or microfinance could develop quickly in China with government support," Yunus said at the Grameen International Conference on Microcredit in China. "It's not charity. It's business that can earn money and also help lift the poor out of penury," Yunus said.

His visit to Beijing comes within a few days of his receiving the Nobel Peace prize for this year. He and the Grameen Bank he founded have been awarded for uplifting thousands of poor through the mechanism of micro credit.

Yunus also advised the Chinese government to set up a special fund to help grassroots organisations focus on micro credit. It was also necessary to allow them to collect deposits from the people so that the micro credit organisations play an active role in lending.
